7 Best Fall Outdoor Activities.

Updated: Oct 8, 2022

The leaves turn yellow and all you want to do is stay on the couch wrapped in a blanket drinking hot cappuccino. Yet, we all know that fall is gorgeous and you should go outside, explore, enjoy the outdoors and stay active to prevent blue moods! To give you enough motivation to put on a pair of boots and head outside, I want to remind you that sun, fresh air, and simply moving around are very healthy for your body and mind. To make it even more enticing I put together a list of great outdoors activities for fall months.

1. Pick the best apple (or better yet a bag of them) at a local farm. Apple picking might sound cliche for some of you but I couldn’t omit it from this list. It’s an awesome outdoor activity to enjoy with your family, kids, friends, your loved one or your date. Dress warm, bring a hot thermos with some tea or coffee and walk through the endless rows of apple trees picking the best ones for your snacks, apple pies, or even preserves, if you’re into that. Farms usually have great little shops too, where you can get local honey, preserves, veggies and much more (healthy and sustainable!). Just remember, an apple a day keeps the doctor away! 😁

2. Pumpkin art exhibits. The one that left me at awe was the Pumpkin Blaze in Hudson Valley. There is another one at Long Island, and even if you live outside of NY or the Tri-state area, you might be able to find something similar close to you. Every year, artists create stunning art carved out of pumpkins for people to enjoy. The Pumpkin Blaze events are so popular, it gets hard to get tickets for them, so make sure to check it out and don’t miss out on all the fun. Expert tip: visit in the evening to see all the beauty in thousands of lights.

3. Pumpkin picking and farm zoos. Now that you’re inspired by the art of pumpkins, it’s time to create one of your own! Find a nearby farm that offers pumpkin picking, and maybe even a farm zoo, corn mazes, or hay rides. All these activities are such simple pleasures, and will definitely allow you to disconnect and recharge.

4. Walk on a beach. Who said a beach is a summer activity? It’s just as awesome in fall! My favourite part about the beach in fall is that it’s not crowded and is very quiet and peaceful. Find a beach close by that has a good brunch or coffee place. Swap your flip flops for a pair of boots, and an ice cream for a hot chocolate or a caramelized apple. It’s a perfect place to get a new perspective and give you motivation for maybe a project you’ve been postponing for a long time. Sometimes, taking a step back from the busy schedule and putting it all on pause for a couple of hours is all you need to lift your mood.

5. Exploring the city or towns around your area. I was going to give you a list of my favorite towns in Tri-state area right here, but the list was so exhaustive, I decided that it’d be my next blog article :) To give you a spoiler, these are my top three: Beacon (NY), Princeton (NJ), Greenwich (CT). The best part about this activity is every town, especially in Tri-state area, has a different vibe, architecture, and food options. Summer might seem too hot for the stone jungles, winter - too cold for a day-long walk, but the fall is where it’s at! Call up your bestie or your date and enjoy the day in a new spot.

6. Biking in the park or along the trails. This activity is so unfairly undervalued! It is so much fun and is a perfect way to explore surrounding areas - not too slow as when walking and not too fast as when driving. Perfect as a light exercise and… sustainable! If you don’t have your own bike, you might be surprised how many rental options are there around, including city sponsored bike rental systems, such as Citi bike. Central Park in Manhattan, Liberty State Park in Jersey City, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and even Governors Island - they all have Citi bikes! If you feel more adventurous, leave the hustle of the city and take a bike along the trails in the woods.

7. Hiking. Are you a lucky owner of a house by a national park? Then I’m very jealous, and most importantly you have no excuse not to hike! But even if you live in a big city, I’m sure there are great hiking trails nearby. For those of you who live in NYC, it’s as easy as hopping on a train and heading up to Hudson Valley towns. Those bright red and yellow foliage views are unbeatable, so don’t miss out!

I hope this gives you enough for a start. As you may have noticed, all these activities are… sustainable and are amazing for your mindset reboot. What is your favorite one? Let’s chat in the comments section below! 😉
